The Right Moves (TRM)
TRM is an asset building group for fifth grade girls in the Lynn Public Schools. TRM uses a strength based, preventive approach curriculum that was designed to target and strengthen both the internal and external assets that exist within or around each of the participants. The creative activities, role plays and curriculum encourage the girls to talk openly with their peers in a safe environment where they are not judged. As trust is developed and relationships are built within the groups, self-esteem levels increase. The Right Moves groups equip the girls with the necessary tools to help them make good choices both now and in their future, and also begin to recognize their sense of purpose.
The Right Moves curriculum focuses on the following topics: communication and problem solving, body image and nutrition, self-esteem, healthy relationships, avoiding risky behaviors/planning for your future and puberty. The girls become active participants in the groups and as they learn about topics they are also engaged in activities such as: team-building/communication games, role-plays, debriefing, art (such as creating and designing folder covers, healthy menus, ad campaign posters for body image, mirror activity for self-esteem), conflict resolution, feelings charades, problem solving, breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and guided imagery.
The Right Moves are groups are facilitated by licensed master’s level clinicians/social workers; who have extensive experience working with youth in a variety of settings. Each are well trained and have the capacity to intervene more in depth when difficult issues arise in the groups.
Referrals are made by fifth grade teachers and Principals at the schools where the groups are facilitated.
