The Right Moves (TRM)
The Right Moves gals!

F&CS has been committed to helping girls grow strong, smart, and bold through The Right Moves (TRM) since 2003. This highly successful asset-building group for 5th grade girls is a result of a collaboration between F&CS and Lynn Public Schools. TRM uses a strength based, preventive approach curriculum that is designed to target and strengthen both the internal and external assets that exist within or around each of the participants. The program targets socially vulnerable 5th grade girls at a time of great change in their lives, when their need to feel a sense of belonging is high and when they are highly receptive to learning in a socially supportive environment.

The creative activities, role plays and curriculum encourage the girls to talk openly with their peers in a safe environment where they are not judged. As trust is developed and relationships are built within the groups, self-esteem levels increase. The Right Moves groups equip the girls with the necessary tools to help them make good choices both now and in their future, and also begin to recognize their sense of purpose. TRM groups are facilitated by licensed Master's level clinicians and social workers, and referrals for girls to join the program are made by 5th grade teachers, principals and school administrators where the groups are facilitated.

Group topics for TRM participants include:

  • Body image & Nutrition
  • Self-esteem
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Avoiding risky behaviors and planning for the future
  • Communication and problem-solving
  • Planning and preparing for middle school
  • Puberty

Activities include:

  • Team-building games
  • Role-plays
  • Art: such as creating and designing folder covers, healthy menus, posters for body images, and self-esteem
  • Conflict resolution
  • Breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and guided imagery

TRM programming is carried out from October - June each year onsite at Elementary Schools located in high-risk neighborhoods. In 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic started in mid-March, TRM programming carried out five cohorts that engaged 50 fifth grade girls. Because TRM is tied with Lynn Public Schools, programming has been suspended at this time. We are hopeful that in-person programming for TRM will resume in October of 2021!
