The city of Lynn can be an extremely challenging place for parents to raise children. For youth, the quality of life issues associated with growing up in Lynn often make it difficult to find safe haven and places to thrive. TEEN SCENE, located in the lower level of our building at 111 North Common Street in Lynn, is a co-educational academic enrichment/violence prevention program which employs a Positive Youth Development framework in order to build assets and resiliency for at-risk youth. The program is a free resource for youth in grades 6, 7 and 8.
TEEN SCENE uses a project-based learning curriculum to enhance the youth’s in-school learning and develop 21st century life skills. Teen Scene offers academic support through tutoring and homework help, asset-building groups, team building activities, summer reading (and projects,) journaling and field trips. Youth have the opportunity to participate in project-based learning labs that emphasize 21st century skills, such as Digital Media, STEM (Lego® Robotics), English Language Arts (Writer’s Workshop), Community Engagement (Youth Venture), and Health and Wellness (Fitness and Movement). Youth engage in weekly evidence based asset building groups/ workshops that are facilitated by staff and high school mentors.
TEEN SCENE Mission Statement
TEEN SCENE’s mission is to aid in reducing teen violence by providing a safe place where youth are motivated to discover new experiences, engage in activities that will build assets, resiliency, social skills and excite them about learning. We believe that project-based learning will be beneficial to the academic and professional development of the teens we serve as they grow to be the new leaders of our community. Continued academic support, violence prevention and enrichment activities help students see an improvement in grades and have an easier time dealing with the pressures of adolescence and school, allowing them to increase their community connections and involvement.
