Healthy Families - Harbor Area
Chelsea, Revere, East Boston, Winthrop, and Charlestown
Funded by The Children's Trust, Healthy Families is a comprehensive, voluntary, home visiting program for all first-time parents ages 20 and under in the state of Massachusetts. Those parents who are pregnant with their first child, or who are parenting a child 12 months old or younger are also eligible to participate in the program. Since its inception, Healthy Families has provided services to more than 27,800 families. Family & Children's Service began this program for families in 2017, and have supported 60 families thus far in the 3-year program. Currently, 41 families are enrolled in the Healthy Families Harbor Area program.
The program matches parents with trained professionals who visit families’ homes to provide support during pregnancy and the child’s first three years of life. Home visitors teach parents about proper baby care, promote nurturing and attachment, practice effective parenting skills, and ensure parents have a solid understanding of healthy child development. They also counsel parents on achieving personal goals such as going back to school or securing a job. The program runs from pregnancy through the child’s third birthday. Bi-cultural home visitors go to the homes of pregnant women and new mothers, and provide emotional and concrete support for the participants and families who are adjusting to a new culture and health care system.
