AmeriCorp Service

AmeriCorps is a civil society program supported by the U.S. federal government, foundations, corporations, and other donors engaging adults in public service work.  Once you join AmeriCorps you will gain valuable work experience while working towards the goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community. Members receive a stipend or living allowance while they learn to be a leader, and gain real job skills.  A post-service Education Award of $5,815 (frequently matched by local schools) is an additional benefit. The AmeriCorps member at F&CS will be collaborating with two youth-focused programs:  TEEN SCENE is an after school academic enrichment program for middle school-aged youth, and Project PRIME is a school- and community-based sexual health education program targeting high school-aged youth.   Responsibilities include the following:   

Support the youth in planning and implementing age-appropriate civic engagement projects.

Provide academic/tutoring support to middle school participants on a one-on-one basis or in small groups.

Provide structure and support to complete homework and assigned reading.

Develop project-based learning activities with the participants.

Plan and facilitate group and recreational activities for all program participants.

Coordinate presentations by outside providers to follow the program scope of work.

Support the high school mentors that work with the middle school program participants.

Provide weekly team planning meetings with program mentors.  

Responsible for the timely submission of all data, paper, and reports required by the program and agency, including document the practical skills youth develop in areas such as meeting facilitation and event coordination.

Attend monthly All Corps training day and community meetings, as needed.

Attend individual weekly supervision, program and staff meetings.

Flexible hours to meet the needs of the program.

Co-facilitate health education workshops that focus on the prevention of STI’s/HIV and unwanted pregnancies among high school-aged youth (training provided).

Recruit youth from the community health workshops to engage in the SCI Youth Leadership Curriculum.

Co-facilitate a DPH-sponsored youth leadership and civic engagement curriculum (training provided).

Conduct planning meetings with the high school-aged participants to engage in civic engagement project/s.

Collaborate with other SCI Youth Program Coordinators on joint efforts including occasional activities that bring together youth from various SCI locations


Ideal candidates will minimally possess an associate’s degree in the human service field and/or experience working with at-risk youth in a school, summer camp or after school setting.  Experience with tutoring, mentoring and/or facilitating youth groups is required. Candidates should have knowledge of relevant social support agencies and programs. In place of a degree, the candidate will have 2-3 years of experience working with the target population in similar activities.
